Securing your macbook

macosx-securityLast time I felt positively surprised by a security tool, was when I discover paketto keiretsu network scanner tools. So today, I was positively surprised by a tool which permits you to find your laptop when is stolen. It is not very original as an idea. The technology for something like this exists already for cars since the 90′s. However still, it’s a very good idea and in some cases it actually led the owner of the laptop to the stolen item.

The program I’m talking about is multi-platform and it’s called Prey. It works under MacOSX, Windows and Linux. It’s a set of python scripts.

While it’s a project on the run, I have no idea how stable it is, the license is GPLv3 which promises a long life for this project.

Once I’ve used it for a couple of months I will write a more detailed review on the program’s usage and behaviour. According to the documentation though, this program should run on the background without causing issues to the user or the system.

I was so excited about the idea behind this project that I spent an hour writing the Greek translation and I’ve posted to the mailing list. I hope that the developer add it soon to the precompiled packages.
