Στην Θεσσαλονίκη υπάρχουν πολλοί μεταπωλητές υπολογιστών Macintosh καθώς κι ένα Applestore. Δεν υπάρχει Apple Hellas όπως γνωρίζεται φαντάζομαι, οπότε υπάρχουν παράλληλες αγορές και φυσικά ο επίσημος αντιπρόσωπος, η Rainbow. Συνεργάτης της Rainbow στην Θεσσαλονίκη είναι η Elite ΑΒΕΕ η οποία έχει ανοίξει και το Apple Store.

Εδώ θα παραθέσω τις εμπειρίες από την αγορά του iMac 2.8 Ghz 24″. Οι τιμές, των προϊόντων Apple μέχρι πριν από λίγα χρόνια ήταν “fixed” και υπερτιμολογημένες στην Ελλάδα. Λοιπόν, να πω ότι ο iMac που ενδιαφέρει είναι ο καινούριος 2.80 Ghz / 4 GB Ram / 320 GB HD / ATI Graphics card. Βρήκα πολλές και διαφορετικές τιμές, καθώς και διάφορους τρόπους πληρωμής. Παρόλα αυτά δεν ήταν όλες οι προσφορές τόσο ελαστικές όσο έδειχναν εξ αρχής.

Αρχικά πήγα στο Cube γιατί είναι στην Δράμα και είχα κάθε καλή διάθεση να στηρίξω μια τέτοια προσπάθεια, αν και δύσκολη. Δεν μου άρεσε καθόλου η συμπεριφορά τους, καθότι έχω την εντύπωση ότι προσπάθησαν να μου πουλήσουν τον iMac στην μεγαλύτερη δυνατή τιμή που υπολόγισαν ότι θα πλήρωνα, μάλιστα έφτασαν να μου ζητήσουν 2.500 € για ένα μηχάνημα που 120 χιλιόμετρα πιο πέρα κόστιζε 1.749 €. Τελικά κατέβασαν την τιμή στα 2.000 € αλλά το πουλάκι - cest moi - πέταξε.

Πετώντας λοιπόν στο ThesMac βρήκα πολλές επιλογές. Αρχικά προτίμησα να επικοινωνήσω με την Best Deals γιατί διάβασα πάρα πολύ θετικά σχόλια, τα οποία οφείλω να ομολογήσω πως επιβεβαιώθηκαν! Η best deals βρίσκεται στον κεντρικό δρόμο του Πανοράματος Θεσσαλονίκης. Είναι σχετικά μικρή εταιρία αλλά απόλυτα λειτουργική! Στο κατάστημα τους έχουν ετοιμοπαράδοτα προϊόντα ενώ ο άνθρωπος με τον οποίο μίλησα φάνηκε ξεκάθαρα ότι ήταν γνώστης του αντικειμένου. Το πολύ θετικό με την Best deals είναι ότι προσφέρει υποστήριξη σε επίπεδα που η Elite Computer Systems τα ονειρεύεται! Για εταιρία νομίζω ότι είναι μονόδρομος η συνεργασία με την Best deals ενώ σε δεύτερη μοίρα βάζω την Elite. Θα τον αγόραζα επί τόπου από την best deals τον iMac αν δεν υπήρχε ένα πρόβλημα με την πιστωτική κάρτα. Η best-deals προσφέρει την δυνατότητα αγοράς iMac με δόσεις, 6 με 4% επιβάρυνση επί της τιμής και 12 δόσεις με 7% επιβάρυνση επί της τιμής. Για το % επιβάρυνσης 12 μηνών δεν είμαι απόλυτα σίγουρος καθώς δεν με ενδιέφερε, πάντως είναι η 7% ή 8%. Το πολύ θετικό είναι ότι δεν θέλουν προκαταβολή. Το πρόβλημα που συνάντησα, με τον Χρήστο, τον υπεύθυνο που ανέλαβε να με εξυπηρετήσει, ήταν ότι η κάρτα μου Emporiki Visa με πιστωτικό όριο στα 1.800 € δεν ήταν είχε άδειο το αντίστοιχο ποσό του iMac 24″, 2.8 G + 2 GB Ram δηλαδή 1749 €!! Είχε λιγότερα, οπότε η Eurobank με την οποία συνεργάζεται h bestdeals δεν αναγνώριζε ως επιτυχημένη την συναλλαγή!!! Αυτό είναι κάτι που συναντώ πρώτη φορά! Πίστευα ότι θα χρεωνόταν μόνο η 1η δόση ~ 280 € αλλά τελικά δεν ήταν έτσι. Θα αγόραζα τον iMac από την best deals αλλά βιάζομαι υπερβολικά και δεν προλαβαίνω να ξεχρεώσω την κάρτα μου μέχρι το τέλος του μήνα για να κάνω την αγορά του iMac από εκεί.

Αφού δεν μπόρεσα να ολοκληρώσω την αγορά από την best deals, πήγα στο Apple Store Θεσσαλονίκης το οποίο λειτουργεί ως υποκατάστημα της Elite. Πολύ όμορφο μαγαζί, αλλά η διαφορά στο service από την best deals ήταν εμφανείς. Σε 4 ατάκες που ανταλλάξαμε με τους νεαρούς, ένιωσα ενοχλημένος από την στάση τους. Δεν πήγα ούτε για να κάνω dicksize με 2 παιδάκια, ούτε γιατί “πολύ θα ήθελα αλλά δεν μπορώ να αγοράσω” έναν Mac υπολογιστή. Τέλος πάντων, όπως ήταν αναμενόμενο η τιμή ήταν περίπου 100 ευρώ επάνω σε σχέση με την Bestdeals, με εγγυημένο το κακό service και λιγότερο ελαστικά προγράμματα πληρωμής: απλά αυτή είναι η Elite στενός συνεργάτης της Rainbow, σημειώνω ότι δεν είμαι ο μόνος πελάτης που έχει αυτήν την άποψη και την αποφεύγει όπως μπορεί. Να σημειώσω ότι για κάποιον λόγο συνεργάζονται με την Εθνική, η οποία δεν αναγνωρίζει την Emporiki Visa αλλά μόνο την Emporiki Mastercard, το είδαμε κι αυτό!

Έπειτα πήγα στο MacOnLine το οποίο είναι σε πολύ κεντρικό σημείο. Κι εκεί η τιμή ήταν λίγο ακριβότερη, 50 € αλλά ο υπεύθυνος μου φάνηκε στον κόσμο του. Όταν μπήκα στο μαγαζί, δεν μίλησε πρώτος αυτός αλλά εγώ, ναι είμαι κακομαθημένος πελάτης, ειδικά όταν πρόκειται για αγορά 2.000 €. Έπειτα δεν με κοίταξε ούτε μια φορά, όταν τον ρώτησα τρόπους πληρωμής και τιμές ήταν και πάλι εντελώς αδιάφορος, δεν έχει ετοιμοπαράδοτο τίποτε, και δεν θέλησε καν να ελέγξει την πιστωτική μου κάρτα. Μου είπε ότι για την ώρα έχει πολλές παραγγελίες, και μάλλον έτσι ήταν, κι ότι όλα στο μαγαζί είναι sold out! Τέλος πάντων, αυτός δέχεται όλες τις πιστωτικές εκτός από αυτές της Εθνικής.

Λίγο πιο κάτω ήταν τα Multirama τα οποία είχαν την ίδια τιμή με το bestdeals στον iMac 2.8 Ghz, 300 G HD, και δόσεις άτοκες, δέχτηκαν χωρίς πρόβλημα την πιστωτική, έκαναν on the fly την όλη διαδικασία, αλλά δεν τον είχαν ετοιμοπαράδοτο. Τον περιμένω στην Δράμα, στο σπίτι μου, την Πέμπτη (Τρίτη-Τετάρτη μου είπε ο πωλητής με την σιγουριά αγελάδας που την ρωτάς που είναι η στάνη, αλλά είμαι σίγουρος ότι αν έρθει αυτήν την εβδομάδα θα έρθει Παρασκευή).

Επί της ουσίας, αγόρασα τον iMac από την πιο φθηνή πηγή που βρήκα, αλλά στην ουσία κι από την μόνη πηγή που βρήκα, η οποία να δέχεται χωρίς πρόβλημα την κάρτα μου. Τη τιμή του με 2 GB Ram είναι 1678 € με 6 άτοκες δόσεις. Το μόνο που μένει είναι να φτάσει σε ικανοποιητικό διάστημα και κατάσταση στα χέρια μου.

Οι πιο συμφέρουσα είναι με διαφορά του MacOnLine αλλά δεν ξέρω κατά πόσο προσφέρει υποστήριξη το συγκεκριμένο κατάστημα. Επίσης κάτι άλλο που πρέπει να δείτε είναι ο τρόπος πληρωμής, δεν έχουν όλοι τις ίδιες δυνατότητες με αποτέλεσμα να είναι λίγο έως πολύ διαφορετική η κατάσταση. Πάντως ο ανταγωνισμός, έχει ρίξει τις τιμές αρκετά σε σχέση με το παρελθόν.

First install MacPorts. Follow the documentation here. The BSD system is a very powerful tool for our MacOSX system. Then learn how to use ports.
Afterwards, try this:

Now, let’s install the GnuPG 2.0 version which is more secure and recent anyway:

Your keys are ready. You can find in the directory $HOME/.gnupg/ . Your keys can be used to sign and most importantly encrypt files. We are going to
use it for messages but it’s not the only use. PGP can be used to files sign also when used from command line. The last version of Nautilus, the famous
GNOME file manager, supports on the fly encryption of files with the mouse right click on the file, using GnuPG keys.

To see your key and create a public.key file just type:

Now you can share your key with anyone! You can submit to the http://pgp.mit.edu server for others to find it easily!

In order to use our GPG with Mail me need to install GPGMail package.Note that there are multiple versions available. Choose the one that applies to your system MacOSX 10.4, 10.3 or 10.5. Just download the package and put the “GPGMail.mailbundle” in the $HOME/Library/Mail/Bundles directory. If the directory does not exist, you can created it manually.

More info on GnuPG command line usage can be found at dewinter’s page, there is of course the official documentation. Note that the GnuPG can handle other algorithms like IDEA, using external plugins. Hope this small & dirty guide was helpful for you too!

Then just open the Mail.app and go to Preferences -> PGP.

Για να εγκαταστήσουμε το firmware 1.1.3 συμφέρει να πάρουμε ένα backup του iPod Touch, μέσω του iTunes κι έπειτα να κάνουμε downgrade σε 1.1.1 . Αυτό γίνεται εύκολα, με την διαδικασία που έχω περιγράψει σε προηγούμενο post. Το upgrade σε 1.1.3 μπορεί να γίνει κι από την έκδοση 1.1.2, όμως έχουν σημειωθεί κάποια προβληματάκια. Για περισσότερες πληροφορίες δείτε τα links στο τέλος του post. Υπάρχουν τρόποι, απλά ΄δεν περιγράφονται εδώ γιατί τους θεωρώ περιττούς.

Από το firmware 1.1.2 ή 1.1.3 μπορούμε να κάνουμε downgrade στο 1.1.1 για να αρχίσουμε την διαδικασία του jailbrake! Για να το κάνουμε αυτό, κατεβάζουμε το firmware 1.1.1 και το σώζουμε στον υπολογιστή μας. Έπειτα ακολουθούμε την διαδικασία που περιέγραψα σε προηγούμενο post για το downgrade. Στα Windows το πλήκτρο επιλογής αρχείου firmware είναι το SHIFT - Ευχαριστώ τον the_Prodigy για το hint

Αφού έχουμε την έκδοση 1.1.1 jailbroken. Ο Installer θα σας ζητήσει να κάνετε upgrade σε μια πιο καινούρια έκδοση. Εγκαταστήστε το πακέτο BSD Utils πριν κάνετε upgrade τον Installer. Έπειτα κάντε το upgrade, κι αφού τελειώσει κάντε add στα repo’s του Intaller το http://ijailbreak.com/repo.plist. Θα γίνουν refresh τα sources και θα δείτε μια καινούρια κατηγορία με όνομα iJailBrakeMobile. Πηγαίνετε εκεί κι επιλέξτε το 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 upgrade. Έπειτα θα δείτε το εικονίδιο iJailbrake στο Springboard. Πηγαίνετε στις προτιμήσεις κι βάλτε το Autolock στο Never, έτσι ώστε να μην κλειδώνει αυτόματα το iPod στο 1 λεπτό (είναι το default status). Έπειτα επιλέξτε το iJailbrake εικονίδιο κι αφήστε το iPod να δουλέψει. Το upgrade θα κρατήσει περίπου 45 λεπτά, με μια 1024/128 γραμμή ADSL. Μόλις τελειώσει αυτή η διαδικασία, εγκαταστήστε και τα ακόλουθα προγράμματα: Remove 1.1.3 Jailbreak Data και iPod Touch Software Upgrade για να έχετε τα iPhone apps στο iPod Touch, ενώ υπάρχει και το Fix Mail Passwords πιο διορθώνει ένα πρόβλημα που υπάρχει σχετικά με την διαχείριση κωδικών στον email manager του Touch.

Και κάτι τελευταίο. Ο AriX, ο hacker που έγραψε αυτήν την μέθοδο που πρωτείνω για το jailbrake του 1.1.3 είναι 13 ετών. Η μέθοδος είναι απλούστευση άλλων, προηγούμενων μεθόδων που χρησιμοποιούσαν γραμμή εντολών κι άλλα manual fixes.

In a post on 24th November 2007 I was questioning Apple’s decision, to lock down the iPhone and iPod Touch, along with the general company’s policy to lock down or intervene into everything possible (iPhone, MacOSX, AppleTV, iTunes, etc).

Now it seems that some Apple addicts, gave me a straight answer. The main reason for doing this is: Because hacking things, leads into breaking them and making them not functional. Apple wants it’s products to Just Work. Okay I can buy that. It sounds fairly clear! How many chances do you have to break an iPhone that is not jail-broked? Not much! However, having an iPod Touch for two months now, I didn’t experienced serious problems. So I can’t accept that as the sole reason.

It’s true that my Playstation 2 never had issues. Maybe because I didn’t hack it! Hell yes! But wait, with my PS2 I did two things mainly… Oh no! Not mainly, just two things: Play and watch DVD’s. That’s what the PS2 was made for after all! But a computer is kinda different. You need to do a hundred of different things! Why keep locking people out? Now, the iPhone, could be (actually it is due to the mac community) a great next-generation smart phone! The iPod Touch, jail-broken turns out to be a small computer at all effects! File sharing, Terminal window, Samba or httpd server, it can run, ruby, python, php or perl applications for Christ’s sake!!! Why keep this jewel locked??? Just to be sure that the PHP application that you will run on it, is not buggy as hell? No! I can’t accept that!

Having a UNIX background the above reason looks silly. But I don’t think that the average user keeps it’s iPhone unlocked. I’d like to have a statistic about the iPhone: How many of the sold iPhones are jail-broken?. If the statistics show above 80% than Apple would have to rethink it’s strategy. One last thing, I don’t remember of anyone that lost profit in the long when going OPEN.

Apple’s new ruby is called MacBook Air. The new outstanding computer made by Apple is thin and lightweight. In his blog John Grubber made a good comparison with the other two laptops produced by Apple, the MacBook and the MacBook Pro. All three computers target a different kind of people. Reading many posts and comparisons about the MacBook Air around the web, I’m getting the feeling that most people don’t realize why Apple created such a product.

When a company, Apple or any other for that matter, creates a series of products, it’s because each and every products targets a specific group. This group can be large, like university students, home internet users, doctors, business mans, programmers, etc. Then there are the niche markets, when a product is made for specific uses. That’s the case of Apple’s new laptop. Considering the fact that is not multimedia oriented, nor gaming will be amusing on it, what’s it’s purpose? Most Macintosh users just don’t understand that this is not a product for us, fascinated Apple consumers. It’s a product, strictly, for business mens.

Now, what are the needs of a business man? First of all, weight and size. The “Air” delivers both with an uncomparable style and beauty. Then most business mans need a computer that is able to do things like spreadsheet and document creating, editing and viewing. Microsoft Office 2008 for MacOSX is shipping already and there are other valid alternatives like iWork and Open Office. Not to mention freeware editors like Bean. Browsing is done in a good fashion with Apple’s default browser while email is handled by Apple’s Mail application which is also good enough and it’s integrated with spotlight. Works like a charm! The Intel Core Duo processor delivers much more power than you will ever need in order to view a presentation in Quicktime, Keynote, Power Point or any other presentation software. There are many instant messaging choices, the best is Adium in my humble opinion. So what else do a business man need in order to keep his stuff? Nothing!

Many users complained about the price, the lack of storage space or even the lack of a powerful graphics card. The answer is simple, this laptop is not for the average mac geek who spends time on line and users his laptop for everything. Apple has already made two laptops for this kind of usage, the MacBook for students and average users that don’t need extravagant features on their laptop and the Macbook Pro for advanced users who need a kick ass laptop.

There’s nothing more to say to people winning around about the price of this jewel. It may be good for programmers who travel often, it is definitely the best business men and office oriented laptop, that you can take with you with the less harassment possible.

I don’t know when was the last time that I saw a computer with comparable beauty. Oh yes! When I first saw the iBook G4! I consider the iBook, the most beautiful laptop ever made, until now. It’s a matter of looks!!!

For it’s target group, I consider the MacBook Air a very innovative computer. Apple once again posed new boundaries to the market. That’s what this company does best, surprise us! Remember, no one forced the average Apple geek to buy one!

I firmly believe that GNU/Linux will overthrown other operating systems in the future if lawsuits and corporate tricks doesn’t stop in some way, the development. Of course, I’m not sure, no one can tell what’s gonna happen next, but I think that the operating systems in the future along with the internet will be free or dead. Free meaning, not priced. Not necessarily open source, just free. I believe that the operating systems will become a platform for developing programs. They already are. Windows, MacOSX and GNU/Linux have all powerful development tools with their pro’s and con’s. The main difference is the price: GNU/Linux is FREE. It’s development model may has it’s week spots. The end user, for most GNU/Linux programmers is considered above the average end user’s level. Which is not wrong at all. If some Linux geek needs a widget his desktop, Fluxbox, I as a GNU/Linux hacker he may write the code and the GUI just for his window manager not carrying about others. He may not care too much about newbies and installation harassment. Yes, still it’s free. The lovely distribution called Ubuntu has done a marvellous work around Linux. It made it much more efficient and easy to install and upgrade. Still there are issues that require console to be used, while MacOSX doesn’t require console although the BSD roots are visible if you open the Terminal.

Linux already is a great platform for corporations to develop their business on it. It’s not an accident that the Linux server market share is huge and growing. The TCO is often in Linux’s favour. Especially when it comes to large scale projects.

Linux is usually the first operating system to implement new ideas. Usually these new ideas are badly or poorly implemented, but most of them start here. Widgets for example, made their first appearance in MacOSX Panther if I’m not mistaken using a third party program and then Apple implemented them into Tiger. Microsoft waited for Windows Vista, in order to put them on the desktop. For computer users like me, widgets are just memory consuming eye candies, that usually hurt productivity, but still the first operating system that had small pieces of software running on the desktop showing computer stats, the weather or other staff where made for Linux. This is just one of the ideas. There are many other examples.

Big corporations supported linux after they understood it’s possibilities and the divine gift that were given to them by Linus Torvalds and the GNU community. File systems such as XFS, JFS and EXT3FS were made for Linux by corps. IBM strongly supports linux, Sun Microsystems supports Linux, while producing Solaris, HP supports Linux too. With corporations like the these it’s hard to fail.

Back on the desktop. Linux still has a very small percentage of users. But, think about it, can it grow smaller? I’m convinced that it cannot. It can only grow larger and stronger. The reason, is the openness and price. How can you compete with something that its free? By delivering a far superior product and supporting it. But for how long will Windows and MacOS be so much better than Linux for desktop users. There’s a convergence towards a similar model. You can see it clearly if you check out the three new operating systems: Linux Ubuntu (KDE 4.0), Windows Vista, MacOSX Leopard, they all have the same eye candies, the same capabilities. Ubuntu has done a great job, I rarely have to use command line with Ubuntu. In a few years, if the developers and community can keep the pace, they will need no console at all to make everything work (printers, scanners, webcams, etc). What will happen then?

People still use Microsoft’s pirated products. Piracy kills both open source programs and closed source programs. If someone needs to use Adobe’s Photoshop for it’s supreme picture editing capabilities, he must purchase the software! Otherwise go Gimp and be legal. Most of the average users will never use Photoshop’s advanced features.

While I like so much the MacOSX and the Macintosh community, for being smart and fancy and everything, like Apple and MacOSX is, I see no future if the OSX remains closed. I’m talking about the immediate future, I’m talking about something that will happen in 50 or 60 years. When all the operating systems around will be very much alike. I may or may not be wrong, I hope I’m not though, for the sake of everybody. I don’t believe that software like Final Cut should be free. I firmly believe that considering the fact that Linux is around, the others have no choice. They must go open source, free or die.

I was reading everything about the iPhone Hacks and the applications that needs an unlock in order to run. Then I crossed web sites like appsafari and see how many applications are there for iPhone and the iPod Touch. There is a huge market of applications, I’m not sure if these apps are all free for download or licensed. However, what I need to to do in order to run them is unlock the iPod Touch, which is completely absurd! It’s like having thousands of possibilities, thousands of potential clients, a potential market for your specific device and shouting the door? Why?! Does Apple remember the 90’s? As cosmix writes, Apple is kinda suicidal when it comes to choosing paths and policies. Something that hurts the fantastic mac community, which is similar and close to open source - alias GNU/Linux - community. It’s clear the Steve Jobs have much more close ideas then his nemesis, Bill Gates

The forthcoming release of N810 could turn the iPhone into a dunce! I don’t want to compare a Google’s Android to the iPhone because I don’t know if it’s a direct competitor. In order to avoid that, Apple released the much expected iPhone SDK and for what? Just to keep our iPod Touch and iPhones locked? Where’s the advantage of such policy? I was sceptic about Apple’s behaviour now and I’m urged as an iPod Touch user now! It’s almost sure that I’ll use software to unlock the device and run applications on it. It’s half the value without 3rd party app’s. I will buy music with no DRM from amazon’s on-line store and you know what? I’d like for my iPod touch to have with amazon’s store the integration that I have with iTunes! Why not? Owning an iPod makes me an Apple user? No! That’s why they created an iTunes version for windows (Where is the Linux version?).

I can’t understand why Jobs keeps acting like a total idiot when it comes to locking operating systems and devices, while Apple has gain so much from the open standards every time the company embraced them. Money are good. No one can live without them. But when a company pursues them carelessly makes it’s customers, the vital source of the company, worry. A company’s life is strictly dependant on the sales. If the quality is low and the production sucks, it can survive. If the company doesn’t sale it’s product it will seize to exist.

So now, I have to hack my device to make it do what I want to! How great! Some of you may think: “Hey you knew that before getting the gadget!” well, yes I knew it, but I needed an iPod and decided to go for the big ride. I already ordered my next mobile phone, which against my former decisions, it will not be the iPod but something slightly less sophisticated. I didn’t want to wait for N810 to hit the Greek market. I dislike it’s design anyway, but I could try it out because it’s Linux and the SDK is already there.

Σήμερα έφτασε το iPod Touch που παρήγγειλα από το expansys πριν από 28 ώρες. ΥΑΥ!! Έφτασε σώο και αβλαβές, ενώ το ευχάριστο με αυτήν την εταιρία είναι ότι παρότι Ευρωπαϊκή έχει κατάστημα Paypal. Προτιμώ να έχει τον αριθμό της πιστωτικής μου το Paypal παρά ένα οποιοδήποτε website.

Το Touch Είναι τρομακτικό και απίστευτα λειτουργικό. Για μια ακόμη φορά η Apple έκανε αυτό που ξέρει να κάνει καλά εδώ και χρόνια, απλοποίησε την τεχνολογία στο όριο του δυνατού. Αυτοί που έχουν πολύ χοντρά δάχτυλα ίσως δυσκολευτούν μέχρι να συνηθίσουν την τεχνολογία του. Παρόλα αυτά παραμένει άκρως λειτουργικό. Οι πρώτες εντυπώσεις σε κερδίζουν αφού η σχεδίαση του είναι άψογη. Δεν έχω το iPhone, αλλά στα reviews που διαβάζω στο Internet από bloggers, το iPod Touch είναι ομορφότερο σε ότι αφορά το design. Λοιπόν, αυτή η συσκευή συγχρονίζεται τέλεια με το iBook αλλά και οποιοδήποτε Mac, πράγμα που για εμένα είναι χρήσιμο. Συγχρονίζεται όμως και το κινητό μου. Σε μερικές ημέρες περιμένω μάλιστα την καινούρια μου συσκευή, η οποία αν και δεν είναι iPhone είναι συγκρίσιμη με αυτό. Δεν ξέρω τι εξέλιξη θα έχει και κατά πόσο θα κάνω εκτεταμένη χρήση του. Πάντως η δυνατότητα να βλέπω τα αγαπημένα μου σήριαλ οπουδήποτε είναι ενδιαφέρουσα. Επίσης, οι λειτουργίες που έχει μου φαίνονται αρκετές έτσι ώστε να αφήσω πίσω το iBook σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις, σίγουρα είναι φανταστικός φίλος για ταξίδια κτλ.

I never was a strong supported user-friendly distributions. Having had bad time with Mandriva and Redhat in the past, while doing whatever I wanted to with Gentoo which is considered much more hardcore, I decided never again to go for an easy to use Linux distribution. The major problem with Gentoo however, was the lack of time. When I start working for more than 8 hours per day, many days in front of a computer at work, I was not having fun with my home computer anymore. I bought a Mac and my life turned easier in many ways. Although I consider my self an advanced linux user, in the sense of a user who knows where and how to find help when he has an issue, I was not having fun anymore with Linux and I didn’t want to waste my time in troubleshooting. Whoever tells you that Linux is not about troubleshooting, well he is not using it like I did. Being part of a community you want to try things, not a computer that just works.

On the other hand, when I took the Mac I had a UNIX powered, idiot-proof computer. I fell for the macs and the community. I found a community that was way more innovative, with much more genuine ideas than any other. Although it may look similar, the Macintosh communities are way different than the Linux ones. Even between Linux communities you can see quite different behaviour. It’s not the same posting on a Slackware mailing list and posting an issue on the Gentoo forums for instance. The Gentoo forums kept a steady and very new-be oriented policy since day one. While other distributions decided to keep the elite and let the other users drawn. Of course the users behaviour doesn’t depend on the Linux distribution, but some distributions, reflect the users level and (not rarely) style and thinking.

I was somewhere in the middle. Among the two categories, sometimes I was trolling over poor newcomers and (thankfully) most of the times I was helping if and when I could. That was until 2004 though. Afterwards I started to avoiding communities and Linux related issues. And the truth is that since then I’m losing much more time in programming in Objective C, Python, Bash or (now learning) Ruby. But I didn’t waste much time in linux. I turned my home server from Gentoo to OpenBSD in order for it, to be stable and not require often updates. I met the OpenBSD community too. Talking about narrow-minded people? Take a look at the OpenBSD community. They blame and talk bad about everything else, while it’s widely known that OpenBSD fails miserably as a Desktop computer. Most of them are expert users, geeks you could say, programmers and hardcore computer users. It’s the entire OpenBSD project that keeps it’s elite attitude and the users just follow the guidelines the developers give. Theo De Raadt is not an easy guy. You may say that Steve Jobs is not easy as well, but he hardly affects the macintosh community in the way Theo does affect the OBSD community. Enough with OpenBSDers!

Having said the above, I never thought that Linux could turn so user friendly and usable in so little time. The Ubuntu community is really good. The documentation seems to be complete and the final result astonishing. The installation is easy, the migration from windows is easy too. You will not avoid the command line if you have troubles, lets say with your printer, which is a major drawback for a normal user. The look and feel in Ubuntu 7.10 is greatly improved. I still dislike the fonts though. In my computer ( 2.6 Ghz, 512 RAM, 300 GB HD) Ubuntu runs really fast and the eye-candies run smoothly as well. It’s easy to install Greek or other languages, it’s easy to install and uninstall applications. It seems that Linux made some huge improvements over the past two years that I don’t really use it anymore. Plus, Ubuntu seems to have very good interoperability among the standard programs, which you can see in the Synaptic Package Manager with the Ubuntu icon on the left. The programs don’t break, just work and that’s really what the average user needs to know. If they try to put the entire freshmeat.net directory into the distribution they will not be able to improve this interoperability that is very important for the end user experience. The network configuration is done automagically if your computer is connected to the Internet via ADSL or Cable. The only thing that I found annoying is the IPPoverHTTP printer configuration. Still didn’t solve it. Then I missed an application launcher like MacOSX’s Quicksilver. I’ve fount the alt+f2 shortcut which seems to be pretty nice. Not even close to what QS can do, but still a good application launcher!

It’s the first time since 2004 that I’m seriously thinking to switch my main desktop to Linux again. The 24” inches screen makes it a tempting move, the Ubuntu Linux distribution makes it possible at a good point. I can’t create good brochures without Apple’s Pages, but for the rest, it seems to be good. Not as good as an iMac but quite goood

Το γνωστό κινητό της Apple, το iPhone, έχει αρχίσει να διχάζει τους οπαδούς της Apple στα δύο. Η Apple είναι μια από τις λίγες εταιρίες που δεν έχει απλά καταναλωτές, έχει στις τάξεις τις, ένα είδος οπαδών. Οι οπαδοί της εταιρίας είναι κυρίως άνθρωποι που έχουν άμεση σχέση με τους υπολογιστές. Δεν εκτίμησαν πολύ την αλλαγή του ονόματος της εταιρίας από Apple Computers σε Apple Corp. με την εισαγωγή του iPhone στην λίστα των προϊόντων της εταιρίας! Άλλωστε τα περισσότερα έσοδα η Apple τα είχε, έτσι κι αλλιώς από το μυθικό πλέον iPod και το iTunes Media Store.
Με την διάθεση του iPhone η Apple άρχισε, πιο πολύ από κάθε άλλη φορά να ασκεί μια μονοπωλιακή, χωρίς προηγούμενο για την εταιρία του Cuppertino, πολιτική πάνω στο iPhone. Το πρώτο κτύπημα για τους λάτρες της κουλτούρας Macintosh ήταν η απώλεια ενός πραγματικού, full featured, Objective C SDK για το iPhone. Το release της Apple ήταν ένα μικρό pseudo-SDK όπως μπορείτε να διαβάσετε στα σχόλια της κοινότητας προγραμματιστών Macintosh. Ενδεικτικά αναφέρω το post στο Fast and Furius blog. Ένα λάθος που έχει κάνει ο Steve Jobs, είναι να πιστέψει πως οι χρήστες δεν θέλουν έναν υπολογιστή αλλά ένα κινητό τηλέφωνο, πρώτα κι έναν υπολογιστή έπειτα. Ενώ οι χρήστες βλέπουν το iPhone σαν ένα next generation mobile phone που μπορεί να αντικαταστήσει έναν φορητό υπολογιστή για τις βασικές εργασίες, browsing, email, IM, κτλ. Άλλωστε ο Jobs το είχε δηλώσει από τις αρχές του 2007 ότι δεν βλέπει το iPhone σαν υπολογιστή αλλά περισσότερο σαν crossover μεταξύ τηλεφώνου και iPod. Η πολιτική της Apple στην συνέχεια ήταν αποκαρδιωτική για τους περισσότερους computer literate Apple users. Ακόμη και τα ringtones πρέπει να πληρωθούν ξεχωριστά, που σημαίνει ότι εάν αγοράσεις π.χ. το CD της Beyonce και θέλεις να το ακούσεις στο iPhone, δεν μπορείς. Πρέπει να αγοράσεις το DRM-ed ACC αρχείο από το iTunes Music Store. Μετά όμως, αν το θέλεις και σαν ringtone στο κινητό του, πρέπει πάλι να το αγοράσεις σαν ringtone! Πράγμα που εξόργισε του περισσότερους καταναλωτές καθότι, μπορεί η πειρατεία να σκοτώνει την μουσική, η Beyonce όμως σίγουρα, δεν έχει οικονομικά προβλήματα, για την ώρα τουλάχιστον.
Με βάση τα παραπάνω, οι χρήστες βλέπουν μια μεγάλη ευκαιρία της Apple να δημιουργήσει ένα πραγματικά, ξεχωριστό κινητό τηλέφωνο, να μεταμορφώνεται σε μια κλειστού τύπου πλατφόρμα στην οποία η Apple και μόνο αυτή έχει τον πρώτο λόγο. Η Apple όμως δεν σταμάτησε εκεί! Για να γράψεις Applications για το iPhone πρέπει να έχεις πληρώσει στην Apple ένα ποσό, έτσι ώστε να πάρεις το made for iPhone stick (πάντα σε Ajax κι όχι σε Objective C). Αλλιώς το Application σου, θα απενεργοποιηθεί με το καινούριο firmware που θα κυκλοφορήσει!
Αυτό που δεν γνωρίζουμε είναι αν η παραπάνω πολιτική έχει να κάνει με την απληστία του Steve Jobs, είδε άσπρη μέρα με το iPod και φοβάται μήπως του ξεφύγει κανένα δολάριο ή στις συμβάσεις που έχει υπογράψει η Apple με τις δισκογραφικές εταιρίες EMI, Sony BMG, κτλ. και την ίδια την ΑΤ&Τ για το iPhone. Κι έτσι η Apple αναγκάζετε να ακολουθήσει μια πολιτική η οποία είναι σίγουρο ότι θα βλάψει την εταιρία. Άλλωστε o Jobs στο open letter που έγραψε στις 6/02/2007 φάνηκε να καταλαβαίνει ότι ένα DRM-based iTunes Music store δεν έχει και πολύ μέλλον όταν έχουν αρχίσει να κυκλοφορούν non-DRM music stores με το πιο πρόσφατο Amazon Music Store, το οποίο το έχει η Amazon κι όχι καμιά startup εταιρία με αβέβαιο μέλλον.
Οι ερωτήσεις για την πολιτική γραμμή της Apple και για τον πραγματικό λόγο επιλογής της, γίνεται όλο και πιο συχνές. Για παράδειγμα, το τελευταίο firmware upgrade είναι ικανό να καταστρέψει ένα iPhone το οποίο χρησιμοποιεί third party applications, που δεν έχουν τις ευλογίες της Apple! Οι αντιδράσεις των περισσότερων ήταν τέτοιες, που με ένα Google Search καταλαβαίνεις ότι είναι καλύτερα να αποφύγεις το upgrade! Τα θύματα που το έκανα όμως, και είδαν κάποια από τα αγαπημένα τους προγράμματα ή ακόμη χειρότερα το κινητό, εκτός χρήσης, οπωσδήποτε θα πρέπει να δυσαρεστήθηκαν πάρα πολύ! Για να αποφύγει προφανώς τα χειρότερα η ομάδα προγραμματιστών του iPhone, έβαλε στο διαδίκτυο ένα πρόγραμμα το οποίο κάνει την διαδικασία αναστρέψιμη! Και το οξύμωρο σχήμα είναι ότι η πληροφορία βρίσκεται στο Wiki της ομάδας προγραμματιστών, που έγραψε το firmware!!!! Αν δεν πιστεύετε δείτε το!!! Επίσης στην καινούρια έκδοση firmware 1.1.1 , έχουν αφήσει ένα “bug” μέσω του οποίου μπορείς να κάνεις bluetooth streaming τα mp3 που έχει το iPhone! Ακόμη κι αυτό δεν γνωρίζω κατά πόσο είναι κατά λάθος, πρόκειται εν τέλη για bug ή feature;
Με το Z610i της Sonny Ericsson, είμαι απόλυτα ικανοποιημένος γιατί έχω WAP, κι έχω τα βασικά προγράμματα που θέλω, Gmail client, Google Maps, Opera Mini 4 (φοβερή και τρομερή η έκδοση 4 του Opera Mini), IRC Client, SSH Client, MSN Client. Όλα τους third party applications κι όλα λειτουργούν κανονικότατα. Επίσης δεν έχω restrictions σε ότι αφορά τα mp3’s! Ήθελα να πάρω το iPhone με το που κυκλοφορούσε, για να το έχω σαν iPod, Mobile Phone και PDA. Αλλά με τα όσα διαβάζω έχω αρχίσει να αναθεωρώ. Δεν βλέπω το λόγο να πάρω κάτι το οποίο μοιάζει περισσότερο με PayPhone και λιγότερο με εξελιγμένη συσκευή κινητού τηλεφώνου. Δεν υπάρχει περίπτωση να πληρώσω δραχμή για να βάλω σαν ringtone ένα τραγούδι, που το έχω σε original CD (κι έχω περίπου 400 CD’s… )
