On Ferrari’s pass-through decision, Germany 2010
Posted in Sports on July 26th, 2010 by atma – Be the first to commentAt 2010 the German race Grand Prix Ferrari clearly ordered Massa to let Alonso pass through, in order to gain extra points for the pilots championship. It is not the first time that something like this happens, Hamilton, Vettel and other contenders have often been “gifted” by their managers on behalf to the so-called “second driver”. It’s a common practice in F1 since I can remember.
However, there are several issues raised from this kind of behavior. Why it is so important for the team the driver’s championship and not the “team” championship? Why should managers allow things the underly the sports credibility go through. When Alen Prost and Ayrton Senna were battling each other onboard of two McLaren’s the manager was stating that “inside competition is a positive thing, because it puts pressure the drivers and subsequently they improve the cars!”. Probably FIA should drop more attention on the so called “constructor’s championship” and less on the “driver’s championship“, but then again, it’s the team’s policy most of the times that makes the difference.
If we accept the fact that exist “second drivers” who drive just to allow the first driver to win the championship, then again Ferrari’s case is not easy to handle. Massa let Alonso pass through him in a non so convincing way. It was easy to understand that he did not accelerate the car as he usually do after the turn exit. Massa clearly was against this silly order. Probably Massa did not realize that he is a “second driver”, because Domenicalli, Ferrari’s team manager, did not make it clear enough.
Regarding the sport and Alonso’s team radio statement “This is ridiculous”, after Massa not letting him pass the first time, I have to say that this is “as it should”. If Alonso wants to win the F1 championship again, he must prove himself as a better driver even if this means having to surpass his team-driver. Why on earth should Massa stand away? If Alonso was faster he should be able to pass through anyway. However, I’m quite positive that Alonso would have finished second the race, because he was not driving faster then Massa on this race, he was at the same level but not faster.
Trying to punish the Ferrari team is silly because “common sense” on Ferrari’s headquarters states that Massa should allow the pass through. Of course it’s not clearly quoted, but words like: “The team comes first” mean that… Alonso comes first.
As a Ferrari fan I’m really disappointed by this decision and the policy of the team. F1 should be about the faster driver and wins like this one are silly. As for the other teams blaming Ferrari I have to say that they are no better: RedBul and McLaren did the same in similar occasions, not long ago.
The fact remains: If you want to see pure drivers sport with no excuses, try the MotoGP. I wouldn’t dare to ask Valentino Rossi to let Lorenzo pass… Even if they do ask… I’m not sure if the response will be adequate for a public broadcast.
