Flipboard for the iPad

Τα προγράμματα για iPad αυξάνονται και πληθύνονται με το πέρασμα του χρόνου, γεωμετρικά. Το iPad είναι η ιδανική συσκευή για να “καταναλώνεις” περιεχόμενο (content). Δεν μου είχε κάνει ποτέ μέχρι σήμερα εντύπωση κάποιο application για το iPad. Σημαντικά applications, όπως ένα καλό sponsored facebook app, λείπουν διακαώς από το iPad¹. Πρόσφατα όμως, διάβασα για το Flipboard κι άρχισα να το χρησιμοποιώ ακατάπαυστα, σε καθημερινή βάση! Υπάρχει και μια δυσλειτουργία, δεν γνωρίζω γιατί αλλά κάποια Ελληνικά άρθρα τα βγάζει με Κινέζικους(!!!) χαρακτήρες. Όχι σπασμένο encoding, βλέπω ιδεογράμματα!?!

Το Flipboard διαβάζει τα twitter και facebook streams του χρήστη και δημιουργεί ένα είδους περιοδικού, με φωτογραφίες και βίντεο, τα οποία γίνονται display σε ένα πανέμορφο layout που θυμίζει περιοδικό ή εφημερίδα. Τα άρθρα γίνονται preview, κάποια μερικώς άλλα εξ ολοκλήρου, και τα tweets φαίνονται σε όμορφα τετραγωνάκια, όμορφα στοιχισμένα. Κάτι παρόμοιο, κάτι η υπηρεσία paper.li². Παρόλα αυτά, το Flipboard έχει σαφώς ανώτερο layout από το paper.li .

Το πρώτο πράγμα που αντιλήφθηκα κάνοντας ευρεία χρήση του Flipboard είναι η διαφορά ποιότητας του twitter με το facebook stream μου. Στο facebook έβλεπα μόνο video clip και φωτογραφίες – πολλές ομολογουμένος γελοίες – που μου ήταν άκρως αδιάφορες. Στο twitter stream, με ελάχιστες εξαιρέσεις, πολλά posts ή σχόλια δημιουργούσαν ένα ευχάριστο ψηφιδωτό άρθρων γύρω από την τεχνολογία κυρίως, και την επικαιρότητα, με συνδέσμους και σχόλια από τον παγκόσμιο αλλά και Ελλαδικό τύπο.

Σήμερα διάβασα γι αυτό και στο NewsWeek, issue 23 & 30, August 2010, σε άρθρο του Daniel Lyons, “When you are the editor“, στο οποίο αναφέρεται ότι το Flipboard είναι μια προσπάθεια δύο ανθρώπων, του Mike McCue και του Evan Doll. Ο δεύτερος είναι πρώην υπάλληλος της Apple. Η ιδέα για τους ήρθε όταν συμφώνησαν ότι, το να διαβάζει κανείς ένα twitter stream είναι δύσκολο. Η εταιρία απασχολεί 19 εργαζόμενους κι είχε πάνω από 150 προσφορές για διαφήμιση στο Flipboard τις πρώτες εβδομάδες λειτουργίας. Ακόμη δεν έχουν βρει ένα μοντέλο εσόδων, προσπαθώντας προφανώς να βελτιστοποιήσουν τις επιλογές τους.

Να σημειώσω ότι ακόμη και payware στα 7.99 EUR θα το αγόραζα ευχαρίστως. Το Flipboard έχει χρηματοδοτηθεί από VC με 10.5 εκ δολάρια!

Ελπίζω να δούμε στο μέλλον παρόμοιες αξιόλογες και καινοτόμες προσπάθειες όπως αυτή. Κάνουν την ζωή των χρηστών… Ομορφότερη!

I have been an “Economist” subscriber for almost 3 years – not in a row – and I can say that there were many article, in the G. W. Bush era that were shamelessly pro-USA, even when USA foreign policy where absurd by all means. Indeed the result, that no one can argue now, is that after 8 years of Bush government, the USA is down on it’s knees.

Newsweek Magazine

Since May though, I subscribed to “Newsweek”, another famous political-economic journal that I happened to read from time to time, just to make a switch and get a different opinion. Newsweek magazine was recently acquired to Sidney Harman¹ a successful business man. Quoting the daily beast on Newsweek huge losses:

Revenue dropped 38 percent between 2007 and 2009, to $165 million. Newsweek’s negligible operating loss (not including certain pension and early retirement changes) of $3 million in 2007 turned into a bloodbath: the business lost $32 million in 2008 and $39.5 million in 2009. Even after reducing headcount by 33 percent, and slashing the number of issues printed and distributed to readers each week, from 2.6 million to 1.5 million, the 2010 operating loss is still forecast at $20 million.

Apart from a Newsweek subscriber I am also an Apple fan. I read the news and I use Apple products since 2004 extensively. I own a mac mini, I owned 2 iBooks, I own 2 macbooks, an iMac, an iPhone 3GS, a bunch of iPods and an iPad. I follow the Apple community closely as I am a member. Same goes for linux (I’m writing this post, happily, from a Jolicloud powered acer Aspire One netbook). I think I can understand when an article about an Apple’s product is biased or no.

So judging on a stream of Articles I have read on Newsweek issues, I am totally convinced that NW dislikes Apple. In the July 19 issue, Daniel Lyons, argues that the Android is selling more than the iPhone and that people does not want a phone that drop calls… I could argue with each paragraph. Point is, the iPhone 4, whether we like it or not was a major, actually the biggest, hit in cell-phone history. Probably Google will never reach such levels of selling with a single android powered device. The iOs is like 3 generations upfront and there’s another very important factor: Apple is the 3rd biggest smartphone supplier in the USA using a single device.

On May’s 24 issue, Jacob Weisberg get’s it half right. Publishers who publish on the iPad platform should get with the times and deliver interactive content, not just lazy, disgusting PDF files. And yes, most of the magazine apps are overpriced. But then again it’s not really Apple’s fault, if only for the fact that Jobs did not draw clear guidelines on how to approach the publish issue on the iPad. On the other hand though, Apple’s censorship has so far paid out because of the quality of most apps. So, as a general idea, it actually worked much better than Android’s market place. So far at least, however Apple is trashed again here.

On August 2 issue, “Apple gets brused” from the iPhone antenna issue, for which Steve Jobs gave away free iPhone cases. The entire article is a portrait of an egocentric to the point of idiocy Steve Jobs who preferred a beautiful phone over a working phone. The iPhone 4, with all it’s problems works. If the antenna issue were SO serious the phone would have been recalled. Actually the article states that it should, but it’s hard for Steve Jobs to admit that he got it wrong. He got wrong the iPhone 4? Apple’s shareholders think otherwise I guess.

On August 9 issue, the new Kindle is presenting the new Kindle device. I have read about this device on Cosmix’s blog recently. Apparently it’s a great device for reading. But trashing the iPad in favour of Kindle, come on. Amazon stated that it would be happy to see other device’s like the iPad and it will fully support them. The Kindle and every other e-book reader might be a great device for reading books, maybe reading email’s too, but compared to an iPad? … It’s not worthy dropping more lines on the argument: the iPad “wins” by far hands down.

There are a couple of articles, I can’t recall dates and issues right now, which try to argument about Androids and Blackberry’s supremacy. Well, Apple the last 5 years is the leading end-user IT company in the world. I don’t understand why, there is not even one article in 12 issues, painting the Cupertino company with a bright colour.

Add to that articles like: “In defense of Godlman Sachs” and it’s no wonder that sales have decreased. I understand that Google and probably financial institutions such as Goldman are among the major NW clients, but being at least in line with common sense it’s a positive thing for such a famous magazine.

On the other hand, I like most of the material on it, I still consider the “Economist” a better reading though. Next year I might change my subscription to the “Economist” again, or try something else like “Time magazine”.

Δεδομένου ότι τα σήριαλ του δεν μου αρέσουν, ή καλύτερα δεν μου άρεσαν, εκτός από το πρώτο μέρος του “Δύο Μέρες Μόνο”, μπορώ να πω με σιγουριά ότι δεν είμαι “φανατικός” οπαδός του. Παρόλα αυτά γνωρίζω πολλούς, κυρίως γυναίκες, που παρακολουθούν οτιδήποτε καινούριο παρουσιάζει ανεξαρτήτως ποιότητας. Εκτιμώ πολύ την στάση, απέναντι στα φθηνά ΜΜΕ. Δεν τον έχω δει ποτέ να βγαίνει σε τελειωμένες πρωινές εκπομπές, δεν τον έχω δει ποτέ ούτε καν σε ψευτό-cult shows  όπως το Ράδιο Αρβύλα ή τον Θέμο, πράγμα που σημαίνει ότι σέβεται την δουλειά του.

Παρακολούθησα από σπόντα ένα επεισόδιο της σειράς “4″ πριν από μια εβδομάδα. Το Σενάριο μου άρεσε πάρα πολύ. Μου έκανε θετική εντύπωση το γεγονός ότι, πλέον δεν βάζει τον εαυτό του στο επίκεντρο της σειράς¹ με αποτέλεσμα οι πολλοί και διαφορετικοί ρόλοι να αποκτούν βάθος και ενδιαφέρων.

Η επιλογή ηθοποιών κατά την γνώμη μου ήταν εκπληκτική! Από την Σκιαδή μέχρι, τον Παπασπηλιόπουλο και τον Μουζουράκη, οι επιλογές είναι εξαιρετικές. Μόνο στην σειρά “S1ngles” είχα δει τόσο δεμένο cast².

Για την σκηνοθεσία τι να πούμε, είναι η καλύτερη που μπορεί να βρει κανείς σε Ελληνική σειρά. Αυτό όμως δεν είναι κάτι καινούριο. Από την προηγούμενη σειρά του, έδειξε μια ανωτερότητα στο να εκφράζει την κορύφωση των καίριων στιγμών, του κάθε επεισοδίου, με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο, με βάση το budget που έχει. Είναι σίγουρα μεγάλο budget για Ελληνική σειρά, αλλά πραγματικά, σε διάφορες σκηνές η μουσική, η σκηνοθεσία και το ύφος θα μπορούσαν να ανταγωνιστούν ξένες υπερπαραγωγές.

Αναφέρθηκα και πριν στο σενάριο. Το σενάριο είναι σημείο κλειδί. Στο “Δύο Μέρες Μόνο” κατάφερε να ρίξει τρεις τάξεις μεγέθους κάτω, έναν φανταστικό πρώτο κύκλο, με έναν κάκιστο, βαρετό και εντελώς προβλεπόμενο δεύτερο κύκλο. Μου έδωσε την εντύπωση ότι το σήριαλ έπρεπε να τελειώσει στο τέλος του πρώτου κύκλου, είτε με ρομαντικό είτε με δραματικό φινάλε, και το τράβηξε από τα μαλλιά για να δώσει στο MEGA σειρά για μερικούς ακόμη μήνες. Ελπίζω να μην δούμε κάτι τέτοιο σε αυτό το σήριαλ. Η ιστορία έχει ίντριγκα, είναι σαφέστατα αρρωστημένη – αλλά αυτό είναι χαρακτηριστικό του Παπακαλιάτη, πλέον – αλλά και πολύ πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα. Καλό θα ήταν να μην χρησιμοποιήσει τρίτα πρόσωπα, δολοφόνους, βιαστές από το πουθενά ή δεν ξέρω εγώ τι άλλο για να δώσει ένα γλυκανάλατο ή ψευτό-δραματικό, αφηγηματικό τέλος, όπως έκανε με το “Δύο Μέρες Μόνο”. Έθαψε μια πολλά υποσχόμενη προσπάθεια σε ένα μετριότατο φινάλε. Και δυστυχώς, μείναμε με το φινάλε.

Πραγματικά, όπως όλοι οι φυσιολογικοί άνθρωποι, ίσως όλοι οι ρομαντικοί, θα ήθελα να έχει το πιο αισιόδοξο τέλος η σειρά του. Να παντρευτούν τα παιδιά, να ζήσουν τον έρωτα τους κλπ. Στο τέλος αυτό θέλω. Αλλά πάνω από όλα δεν θέλω να κάνει αυτή η σειρά το τέλος της προηγούμενης.

Είμαι στο επεισόδιο 14, μην ρωτάτε που τα βρήκα τα επεισόδια, εκεί που τα βρίσκουν όλοι… Λογικά από την επόμενη Δευτέρα θα αρχίσω να το παρακολουθώ κανονικά από το MEGA, ελπίζοντας ότι δεν θα με απογοητεύσει το τέλος της, ούτε μια δίχως νόημα καθυστέρηση αυτού.

Αυτό που βλέπω πάντως, σαν σύνολο μου αρέσει πολύ. Ο Παπακαλιάτης μου δίνει την εντύπωση ότι μεγάλωσε και ωρίμασε αρκετά ώστε να μπορεί να κρατήσει κι ένα κοινό σαν εμένα, που βλέπω λίγα σήριαλ. Πολύ καλή δουλειά so far.

Σε προηγούμενο post είχα γράψει για το δίλημμα του podcaster. Λοιπόν λύθηκε με τον καλύτερο ή χειρότερο τρόπο. Ο χρόνος θα δείξει. Αποφάσισα να κάνω ένα podcast διαφορετικό από την ζωντανή εκπομπή για πολλούς λόγους, τεχνικούς και μη.

Το TechnoCast μου πήρε σχεδόν μια βδομάδα, κι αρκετά χρήματα για να ετοιμαστεί. Δεν είχα υπολογίσει καθόλου σωστά τους χρόνους. Αν γύριζα πίσω θα το σκεφτόμουν δύο φορές πριν ξεκινήσω ένα τέτοιο εγχείρημα. Παρόλα αυτά, ξεκίνησε, είμαι ικανοποιημένος από το πρώτο επεισόδιο. Είναι πολλά τα σημεία που μπορούν να βελτιωθούν αλλά το βασικό συστατικό είναι ο χρόνος.

Ένα σωστό podcast θέλει πολύ χρόνο και διάβασμα. Σκέφτηκα αντί για εβδομαδιαίο να το κάνω δεκαπενθήμερο ή μηνιαίο. Κι αν δω ότι δεν προλαβαίνω και ζορίζομαι πολύ έτσι θα γίνει.

Τα θέματα της εκπομπής είναι γύρω από τον κόσμο των υπολογιστών. Λίγο πολύ ότι γράφω σε αυτό το blog. Στο πρώτο επεισόδιο έχουμε και δύο πολύ ενδιαφέρων συνεντεύξεις.

Μέσα σε όλα να πω ότι μέχρι να ακούσεις την φωνή σου, έχεις πολύ διαφορετική άποψη γι αυτήν. Όχι απαραίτητα καλύτερη ή χειρότερη απλά διαφορετική. Βέβαια δεν είναι η πρώτη φορά που μου συμβαίνει, αλλά κάθε φορά είναι σαν να είναι η πρώτη.

Για την ώρα θα ήθελα να ακούσω σχόλια από όσο περισσότερους γίνεται. Οπότε επισκεφθείτε την ιστοσελίδα κι αφήστε ένα σχόλιο αν θέλετε.

Most of the readers of this blog, know enough of Google Inc. Google is the owner of blogspot. In the recent years Google has earned the respect of the world-wide open source and internet community because of it’s image. In the past Google has used the quote “we are not evil“, to diversify itself from Microsoft who’s profile is heavily damaged since the raise of the internet, due to it’s discussible politics over time.

Later in 2005, Google received the internet community outrage when it agreed with the Chinese government to censor unwanted content. Google China was created and the image of Google was damaged, although I guess the revenues have rose considerably.

Conspiracy theories about Google and censorship are not that common although they exist. Well, there are even worst conspiracy theories alleged Google to be supported by the CIA or other government agencies.

Google has embraced the open source community since day one and apparently it’s a winning choice. Gmail was a success the Google API is almost everywhere in Freshmeat, Google Sumer of Code is popular as ever and the hits just keep on coming!

The services offered by Google, (Maps, Earth, Trends, etc) are really important and unimaginable before for us to use. Who could tell my father that I would be able to locate our home from my mobile phone using a 3G internet connection, ten or fifteen years ago.

On the other hand, Google has to be very very careful when it comes to a users privacy. In many occasions Google has denied to publicise the id of it’s blogspot or gmail users. This again, it’s a winner, because if Google gets involved in any high profile story regarding privacy, where it’s actions may damaged an innocent user, even “a posteriori “, may have serious consequences.

Google offers a service and it heavily relies on it’s user base. That’s why it’s not so keen to turn it’s back on it’s users. Yes, Google services are excellent, but you can get the same services, maybe even better ones by looking at smaller competitors or at specialised firms. It may not be as easy as it sounds, but while Microsoft is hard to compete because already owns the Desktop sector, by large, Google is one click away. It’s not the same. There are dozens of thousands of companies world-wide that depend on Microsoft’s operating system. How many companies would have serious issues if Google loses it’s place as the best global search engine? Not so many for sure.

In Greece, this summer we faced a never-seen war from the Government and a number of famous, probably corrupted and extremely powerful – for the Greek standards –  journalists against the blogs. Specifically against the blogs. The former major procurator, released an article, in a way of opinion on blogs and bloggers privilege to privacy. Apparently, for the procurator, Mr. Sanidas, even a critique made by a blog, that could be accused as defamatory, is enough to raise it’s privacy, without the written permissions of the procurator. The police will have to decide in each case what to do.

In Greece, the local internet police department is really keen to do everything in order get publicity and please, even controversial popular figures such as Mr. Liakopoulos in the famous case of Blogme.gr . This is just one of the many cases where the Greek internet police department showed an unprecedented eager to explore the case, even jail the poor guy, just for owning an RSS aggregator, showing a complete lack of knowledge of the… internet itself.

The last victim of this outrageous censorship was Troktiko. But the case is different, it’s much bigger and way more important. Troktiko turned into a couple of months the most popular Greek news site. This is because of it’s concrete and satirical way, the speed with which the news appeared on the website and mostly because of it’s revelations for political scandals, which turned the Greek political lifestyle in to a nightmare the last year.

It also targeted the famous, Greek journalist, Triantafyllopoulos. The allegations of Mr. Triantafyllopoulos with bribery, corruption and others are common on many blogs and forums in the Greek online community. He is not respected by many high profile, independent, political and social blogs.

Mr. Triantafyllopoulos has become famous for unveiling big cases in the past, regarding famous people. However, many times he was accused of false accusations to high profile politicians and businessmen. By the time justice had drop Mr. Triantafyllopoulos accusations, due to lack of evidences and reasonable doubt situations, the victims were not able to establish their image, because the press was not paying anymore attention to the specific case.

Mr. Triantafyllopoulos accuses Troktiko of conspiracy against him and sees enemies behind it. People who try to exploit it’s position by spreading falsified news. Even so, this in no way justifies the drop of privacy for the author behind Troktiko. Numerous facts regarding the past though, do not help the prominent journalist position on the matter.

What is the crime of Troktiko blog anyway? The problem with Troktiko as with other blogs, is that people in Greece has been tired of the corrupted one-sided press which is controlled by the government and few homies. The power of blogs is exactly that: Quick and uncensored flow of information. This is what the government pressed by few major publishers and TV holders is trying to control: the uncensored flow of information.

Now, Google comes into play. For us, the Greeks and the international Google users, this is a case scenario which must be resolved in one way, just to give a message to our authorities: They are not above the European and international privacy laws. While it would be hard for a local provider to go against the absurd will of the state, it is not hard for Google to do so, hence protect its users for unjustified accusations.

The point here is that, we should not even care if Troktiko or any other blog for that matter writes truths or lies. The problem is that a blog, a user, a website is censored by the state and accused just because a prominent journalist and a few friends of his, were hosted in the lines of the blog. Is that illegal? It is illegal for me to write that I consider someone to be corrupted? Is it defamation? Can I express publicly my opinion on any matter or on just a couple of matters without being sued? If the victims in question were not famous journalist and newspaper owners would the police even take this case?

This is the right time for Google to show, for what is worth that, it can protect it’s users best interests and in the long run, it’s own.

update: I have sent an email, yesterday, on Google’s blog, feedback section complaining about the banning of Troktiko. Apparently many other Greek bloggers did so. After the examination on the blog, blogspot.com (which means Google) did not find any material that could have been described as defamatory, illicit, etc. I can’t tell if they even read my email. One thing matters most though, that Troktiko is back on track and that’s because Google raised it’s shield.
