Το πρώτο θύμα της επίθεσης του τομέα 49 του γνωστού RIPA (Regulations of Investigatory Powers Act) είναι μια ζωόφιλη. Οι Αγγλικές αρχές της ζήτησαν τον κωδικό για να αποκρυπτογραφήσουν έγγραφα που βρέθηκαν στον υπολογιστή της. Ο υπολογιστής της κοπέλας είχε κατασχεθεί τον περασμένο Μάιο από τις αρχές. Οι επιλογές που έχει η κατηγορούμενη είναι ή να συναινέσει ή να υποστεί κάθειρξη δύο ετών. Εάν υπάρξει η υποψία τρομοκρατίας από το δικαστήριο η κάθειρξη μπορεί να φτάσει και τα πέντε χρόνια.

Η κατηγορούμενη δημοσίευσε την ιστορία στην αγγλική ιστοσελίδα της ελεύθερης διαδικτυακής εφημερίδας Indymedia. Η υπόθεση, είναι όπως πάντα σε αυτές τις περιπτώσεις, πιο πολύπλοκη από όσο φαίνεται εξ αρχής. Τι γίνεται στην περίπτωση που ο χρήστης χρησιμοποιεί κρυπτογραφία τύπου PGP; Μπορεί κάποιος άλλος να κρυπτογραφήσει με το κλειδί του αρχεία. Ποιον θα πρέπει να συλλάβουν; Λογικά αυτόν που έχει το κλειδί! Επίσης όπως ανάφερα, η κοπέλα είδε τις αρχές να κάνουν κατάσχεση στον υπολογιστή της, τον περασμένο Μάιο. Ο νόμος που επιτρέπει την κάθειρξη όποιου δεν συνεργάζεται, μπήκε σε ισχύει τον Οκτώβριο. Οπότε ο συγκεκριμένος νόμος έχει αναδρομική ισχύει. Ο συγκεκριμένος νόμος αναφέρει ότι ο κατηγορούμενος μπορεί να αρνηθεί να δώσει το κλειδί στις αρχές μεν, αλλά μπορεί να τους δώσει τα έγγραφα αποκρυπτογραφημένα. Που σημαίνει ότι οι αρχές αγνοούν τις δυνατότητες λογισμικού όπως το TrueCrypt και BestCrypt με δυνατότητα Hidden Volumes.

Το θύμα του “τομέα 49” λέει ότι δεν θα κάνει πίσω και θα προσπαθήσει να αφυπνίσει τις μάζες έτσι ώστε να γίνει ευρύτερη η χρήση της κρυπτογραφίας και να φανεί η κατάφωρη καταπάτηση του ασύλου της ιδιωτικής της ζωής από τις αρχές. Θα έχει ενδιαφέρων να δούμε πως θα εξελιχθεί η υπόθεση. Να σημειώσω ότι το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο είναι, ίσως, η πιο προηγμένη χώρα σε πολιτικές big brothering με δικαιολογία την καταπολέμηση της τρομοκρατίας.

Jason Bourne is a C.I.A. special program agent who doesn’t remember much of his past. As often happens, our hero wants to escape from his past and live with the love of his life! Sounds original? No. Not a bit! However the Bourne series, are far better than any other series of this kind, like XXX or MI2. Can’t be compared with James Bond because it’s a totally different story plus the fact that Britain’s most famous secret agent is just cult.

What makes Jason Bourne special though is the different approach of the series. Although the action is not missing, the plot is easier to believe and follow without judging the lack of realism in every aspect of the movie. The Bourne Ultimatum the last movie of the series, was a bit better of the other two at the first half and worst at the second. The fact that Bourne escapes in the last scene by talking to a killer and making him have a moral crisis was a bit out of place, to say the least. There will be a fourth movie for sure, because Bourne Ultimatum leaves unanswered questions about the relationship between him and Nicky Parsons, which appeared in the second movie as well.
Another aspect that I find very fascinating about Bourne is that he is the absolute killer. He rarely hesitates, although he admits that dislikes being a killing machine. Again he rarely shows signals of difficulty even when dealing with levelled killers. It’s not, to say like, suffering and bleeding until the end. He just thinks clear and acts quickly. In every situation the hero shows the same, absolutely brilliant, qualities. Most similar movies show a week spot at the main characters skills to give him a hard time at the end of the movie. Bourne is not like that. Maybe it’s just the acting skills of Mat Demon that makes the difference here. I can’t tell. I like him, especially in this movie and I generally consider him a very good actor.

What I like so much about these silly, you may think, action movies is the perception of the world. You see the scenario taking place in so many different places that makes the entire world look small. It gives you the sense of freedom and adventure. It’s the most fascinating aspect for me. Travelling around the world lightweight powered only with technology. Of course it’s a movie and you get only the romantic aspect of travelling. Not jet lags, no broken phone lines, no side effects. Well, it may be naive, but I still like idea of holding the world in your palm.

Σήμερα είχα την τύχη να βρεθώ στην πίστα των Σερρών με τον πατέρα μου για το trackday του TDS. Για club που υπάρχει απλά και μόνο δικτυακά τα παιδιά του TDS έχουν κάνει, πάρα πολύ καλή δουλειά. Δυστυχώς, δεν υπήρχε ο χρόνος να μείνω μέχρι αργά το απόγευμα εκεί κι έτσι στις 11:20 πήγα μια βόλτα στην πίστα Kart, δίπλα από το αυτοκινητοδρόμιο κι έπειτα έφυγα. Πρόλαβα να δω τις 2 Ferrari, 360 Modena και F430, δεν τις είδα μέσα στην πίστα όμως, υπήρχαν και 2 Porsche, μια αγωνιστική GT3 και μια GT2. Είδα μόνο μία Lotus Elise MK1, πολλά S2000 και αρκετά Mazda MX5.

Την προσοχή μου τράβηξαν περισσότερο οι Lotus Caterham, γνωστές και ως SuperSeven. Είναι ένα ιδιαίτερο αυτοκίνητο, παραγωγή Lotus σχεδόν αποκλειστικά για επιτάχυνσης Βέβαια ολόκληρη η φιλοσοφία της Lotus στηρίζεται στα λίγα κιλά, τα καλά κρατήματα και τα sprint που κάνει το αυτοκίνητο. Δεν ήταν ποτέ για μεγάλες τελικές ή πολλά άλογα. Γιαυτό και η συγκρίσεις μιας Lotus με τα υπόλοιπα αυτοκίνητα είναι συνήθως “άκυρη”. Παρόλα αυτά η Caterham είναι ένα εντελώς διαφορετικό concept από τις Elise, Elan, Europa ή Esprit. Προσωπικά μου αρέσει και εμφανισιακά. Δυστυχώς δεν είχα την ευκαιρία να μπω να δω πόσο γρήγορα κινείται σε μια πίστα, πιστεύω ότι σε σχέση με μια Elise υστερεί στις στροφές αλλά η συντριπτική της υπεροχή στην αναλογία κιλών ανά ίππο την καθιστά αισθητά πιο γρήγορη από τις Elise, Elise 111S και 111R. Από όσο άκουσα οι χρόνοι της στις Σέρρες είναι κοντά στο 1,28. Μόνο η Porsche GT3 έχει γράψει τέτοιο χρόνο στις Σέρρες Η Exige αποτελεί μεγαλύτερη πρόκληση για την Caterham.

Another important fact that I didn’t mention in my previous post, but I’m frustrated to find out now is that, compared to PHP, Ruby on Rails applications are really hard to install and set up and the troubleshooting is not always easy. After a few days of messing up with Mephisto I’m still struggling to install a photo gallery that runs was made with ruby on rails. While almost any PHP applications requires a predefined PHP account and a working URL, ruby applications doesn’t come up with a configuration script or GUI, which turns out as a major drawback. I’m dealing with installation of Gullery, a ruby on rails photo publishing program. I’ve lost like 5 hours on troubleshooting and hacking through ruby, gems and rake. If you take a look at Google for “Application error: Rails application failed to start properly” you get about 29.600 results, it’s scary and shows clearly the immature state of Ruby on Rails as a web development platform. However, no one argues about the potential that it has and beauty of the code produced, without mentioning that compared to PHP is far more secure.
Let’s pray that RoR developers will make it a bit more easy to install their applications in the future for us, users.

Today I spend some time finishing my new web site. I think that I will work on this template called Integral. You can find info about the template at the end of the page (check out the parting words). Anyway, I messed up a bit with the CSS. I’m reading a few manuals about HTML and CSS. Apparently they will turn really helpful. A good easy-to-use editor is missing from Mephisto. I say so, because compared to other similar projects, it has a very intuitive user interface but when comes to posting you find your self lost through HTML tags which is not handy for everyone. I’d wanted for my best friends to blog with me, but that will not be possible because both of them don’t share the passion and time that I do for computers and Internet. Why should they bother learning HTML? The good news is that you can use a desktop tool and post through XML-RPC. Textmate works great, I’m posting through TM right now and seems to work fine.
As for Mephisto compared to Wordpress. No. I use Mephisto for two days while I’ve used Wordpress for almost 2 years. Wordpress has a huge community around it. The main reason for me choosing Mephisto are the good comments I’ve read about it online and the fact that runs in Ruby on Rails. I have a sympathy for Ruby. Apart from that, the Themes that are ported for Mephisto are not fully compatible with it yet. I mean, you need to edit the Templates manually in order to make them work as you would like them. For instance, I don’t have an option to add links on the left of the screen. I’ll do it manually, but it’s not handy. I’m not referring to advanced users, whatever that means, and it will take a few weeks (probably) until I finish my templates setup. I’d like to install a photo web gallery and use the same template if possible. We’ll see about that in the future.

About Me

My name is Panagiotis. I am a computer hobbyist, born in 1982 in Xanthi. I live since 1983 in Drama, which is my father’s hometown. I spend my time playing with my computers, listening music, blogging, snowboarding, travelling and of course working. I studied at the Luigi Bocconi university but in late 2004 had to come back in Greece due to health problems. Milan is widely known as the most polluted European city. Since then the task of getting the degree turned into something impossible. I started working at the family business since I came to Greece. Formally I still am a University Student but I don’t know if I will ever get the degree. I’ll decide if I will continue my studies, after I finish my national service duties, which means in May-September 2008.

I’d like to improve my English and learn Bulgarian and French. Bulgarian ’cause of my job and French because I’m love with France and Paris! I went in Paris with no expectations, and I fell in love with the centre of the city. Note that the centre of Paris is twice as big as my hometown, Drama.

My computers are an iBook G4 which I spend most of a time on and a Pentium 4, 2.66 Ghz. The iBook was meant to be a laptop but in the process it turned into my all-in-one computer. The first x86 computer runs now Gentoo GNU/Linux and acts like a server. The desktop x86 computer now runs, Microsoft Windows Home XP and Ubuntu GNU/Linux. I support all the UNIX based operating systems. Although I have not deep bash experience, command line is the only way for me to control a computer. I’m not familiar with MS-DOS, but I’m fairly familiar with GNU/Linux and I can find my way easily through every other UNIX -like operating system I’ve encounter, with some reading of course.

I am also owner of a fantastic Lotus Elise MK2. I’ve been in love with this car since 2000 when I first saw the Lotus Elise MK1 in Milan. I couldn’t think that it will be mine someday but my father made me this amazing gift the October 24th, 2004. A dream came true! Although it’s a Spartan car, I never regret purchasing it. The Lotus Elise, has an added value which is hard to describe. Even when you are feeling down, a ride with this car can turn your mood up easily. The Lotus is a miracle of U.K. engineering as Jeremy Clarkson said and a wet dream as another famous journalist mentioned! The standard edition features only 122 hp and has a 0-100 km/h acceleration in less than 6 seconds, it’s steering capabilities are unbelievable and the design is unbeatable. I consider the Elise the most beautifully car ever designed, along with the Aston Martin DB9 and Maseratti 3200 GT. After 2.5 years of ownership, I still stand and admire the killer design and handling of the Lotus car!

My father has for cars the love that I have for computers. He owns 3 cars, the family car a Lancia Thesis 2.0, a Fiat Bertone model year 1979, and an old Golf 2T which is configured for Rally Sprint, a race tournament that we join. We race together from time to time, I am the co-driver.

Beliefs and Views

I believe that Open Source is often the right choice and a public good, there many reasons to use it when possible. I advocated open source software most of the times because I believe that the wider range of users can doesn’t need proprietary software to do daily operations like: e-mail, browsing, file sharing. I am a strong supporter of the Open Source movement from the philosophical perspective as well.

However I’m not an open source bigot, I don’t believe that proprietary software should cease to exist. For example, I dislike Microsoft, but I consider Microsoft Office suite the best software for office available. I believe that the MS Office suite worth it’s commercial price. It will pay back in a reasonable amount of time if someone needs the extensive features that MS Office has build in. However most of us, can do the same job with the same ease of use with Open Source office suites. I’d prefer using Open Office or other ODF tools for business and iWork with ODF support, for home usage. I am an Macintosh user after all!

Generally I try to avoid Microsoft’s software, and use open source tools, but I accept proprietary software when it’s the natural choice. Same goes for Apple’s software and other companies.

For example; If you are a professional photographer you must purchase Adobe’s Photoshop or a related software. It is a worthy package for photographers and web designers. It costs a lot of money, in my opinion, but if you get familiar with it, you can do amazing things. So, open source is not a panacea for everyone.

Finally I managed to change hosting from Pair Networks to DreamHost. The change was mainly because of the price policy and the multiple possibilities that my new offers compared to the old one. I have to say that Pair Networks proved to be a very serious partner. Maybe this behaviour is the default in the United States. I live in Greece however and when you have to do with OTE, the Greek state-owned Telecoms and Internet provider you are thankful if the other acts professionally. I look forward to have the same treatment from my new partner. Until now I’ve seen a stunning organisation at all levels from DreamHost.

Σήμερα είχα μια συζήτηση στην σκοπιά, με έναν χημικό 29 ετών. Κάναμε μια γενικότερη συζήτηση γύρω από την κατάσταση στην Ελλάδα, οικονομική πολιτική και την γενικότερη αρνητική κατάσταση. Την εφορία, το ασφαλιστικό, την παιδεία. Καταλήξαμε ότι δεν φταίει τόσο το σύστημα, όσο τα άτομα που το απαρτίζουν. Όλοι εμείς, είμαστε σάπιοι, όχι το σύστημα. Επίσης ότι σύστημα και να εφαρμόσουμε, δεν θα μπορέσουμε ποτέ να γίνουμε σαν τους Σουηδούς ή τους Ελβετούς εάν δεν αλλάξουμε νοοτροπία. Τόσο τα παιδιά σε ότι αφορά την παιδεία, όσο οι καθηγητές, οι εφοριακοί, οι επιχειρηματίες, ο λαός και η κυβέρνηση.
Πως θα γίνει αυτό, όταν από παιδί μαθαίνεις στο “ρουσφέτι” και στην βολικό κι εύκολο δρόμο; Πως θα γίνει αυτό όταν γνωρίζεις ότι πρέπει να πατήσεις επί πτωμάτων γιατί έτσι κάνουν όλοι, αλλιώς είσαι απλά το επόμενο θύμα; Απλά, δεν θα γίνει. Με τα υπάρχοντα συστήματα, εκπαίδευσης δεν υπάρχει ελπίδα. Σε οποιοδήποτε επίπεδο το “λαμόγιο” επιβιώνει. Απλά, μην σας πούνε ότι αυτό είναι έτσι παντού, και τους πιστέψετε! Αυτό θα είναι το μεγαλύτερο λάθος.
Μεγαλώνοντας στην Ελλάδα, είχα την εντύπωση ότι δεν υπάρχει περίπτωση να γίνουν αλλαγές Το σύστημα είναι όπως είναι, έτσι θα συνεχίσει να είναι, να χειροτερεύει κατά βάση. Ακρίβεια, πληθωρισμός δεν έχουν τρόπο επίλυσης αφού το περιβάλλων στο οποίο ζούμε χαρακτηρίζεται κυρίως από την διαφθορά και το εφήμερο κέρδος. Είναι σίγουρο ότι οι πολίτες συνήθως είναι τα θύματα. Το κράτος με τον τρόπο του, τους “επιβάλει” την παρανομία.
Σε όλο αυτό το σκηνικό λοιπόν είναι δύσκολο να έχεις ακόμη και την ελπίδα ότι κάτι μπορεί να αλλάξει. Κυρίως γιατί δεν έχεις δει φως, ή τουλάχιστον εγώ μέχρι να διδαχθώ για το Ιρλανδικό θαύμα δεν είχα “δει το φως”. Κι όμως, η Ιρλανδία απέδειξε περίτρανα, ότι παρά τις θεωρίες που θέλουν το χρήμα να συσσωρεύεται σε στενούς κύκλους, τις Η.Π.Α. να δημιουργούν εντάσεις όπου κι όποτε θέλουν, την κακή κατάσταση της Ε. Ε. τα προβλήματα με τις γείτονες χώρες, αλλά κυρίως παρά όλα τα εσωτερικά προβλήματα που είχε στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 80′ κατάφερε να γίνει μια από τις δυνατότερες οικονομίες στην Ευρώπη, με πολύ υψηλό βιωτικό επίπεδο.
Τι είναι αυτό που έδωσε την δύναμη σε αυτό το κράτος να κάνει ένα τέτοιο άλμα; Η απάντηση είναι απλή. Οι πολίτες. Η κυβέρνηση. Και οι δύο μαζί. Οι πολίτες γιατί ψήφισαν και υποστήριξαν νομοσχέδια, τολμηρά, που οδήγησαν την Ιρλανδία έξω από το αδιέξοδο. Το θαύμα λοιπόν έγινε. Μέσα σε δέκα χρόνια η αλλαγές ήταν δραματικές. Οπότε υπάρχει τρόπος. Δεν υπάρχει θέληση προφανώς οι Έλληνες δεν θέλουν καμιά αλλαγή. Και η αλλαγή γίνεται από τα απλά πράγματα. Πριν ακόμη ζητήσουμε νέες κυβερνήσεις ή αδιάφθορους πολιτικούς, θα πρέπει να ξεκινήσουμε από τον εαυτό μας και τον στενό μας περίγυρο. Είμαστε όσο τυπικοί πρέπει; Είμαστε παραγωγικοί; Κυρίως, σεβόμαστε τους συμπολίτες μας και το κράτος; Όχι. Δεν το κάνουμε. Έχουμε ελπίδες για αλλαγή; Όχι, γιατί τα παιδιά, όπως μάθαμε κι εμείς, μαθαίνουν στο πρόσκαιρο κι όχι στου ουσιαστικό.
Θα σας γράψω μια απλή ιστορία, που δείχνει έντονα την διαφορετική νοοτροπία που έχουν οι Σκανδιναβοί. Ένας φίλος του πρώτου μου συγκάτοικου, στο Μιλάνο, είχε πάει για erasmus στην Σουηδία. Στην μέση του εξαμήνου, ο καθηγητής έλαβε στο τμήμα διαγώνισμα. Αφού έγραψε τα θέματα στον πίνακα, τα αρίθμησε έτσι ώστε να μην χρειαστεί να γράψουν τις ερωτήσεις από την αρχή στις κόλλες αναφοράς τα παιδιά και βγήκε από την τάξη. Πράγμα αδιανόητο για τους Ιταλούς φοιτητές. Την επόμενη στιγμή, οι Ιταλοί, πέντε στο σύνολο, μαζεύτηκαν στον ίδιο πάγκο κι άρχισαν να αντιγράφουν περιγελώντας τον καθηγητή που έκανε τέτοια ανοησία. Οι άλλοι μαθητές, οι Σουηδοί, τους κοίταξαν περίεργα αλλά δεν έδωσαν σημασία. Ο καθηγητής ενημερώθηκε από τέσσερις μαθητές, Ιρλανδούς, το ίδιο απόγευμα, για την πράξη τον Ιταλών. Το είχε καταλάβει κι ο ίδιος όμως οι μαθητές του έσπευσαν να του πιστοποιήσουν, το πασιφανές: οι Ιταλοί είχαν αντιγράψει. Στο επόμενο διαγώνισμα, ο καθηγητής είχε 6 επιτηρητές σε ένα τμήμα 80 ατόμων. Οι 2 είχαν στηθεί πίσω από τους Ιταλούς, ενώ οι άλλοι τέσσερις παρακολουθούσαν μόνο αυτούς, από απόσταση. Ο καθηγητής δεν το έκανε θέμα αρχικά. Οι Ιταλοί το κατάλαβαν από την επίμονη επιτήρηση που είχαν στο δεύτερο διαγώνισμα, κι από το κήρυγμα που τους έκανε στο τέλος του εξαμήνου ο καθηγητής. Επίσης, υπήρχε μια γενικότερη αποστροφή των Σουηδών απέναντι τους, μετά από αυτό το συμβάν, χωρίς όμως να προβούν ποτέ σε ακραίες πράξεις.
Το τραγικό στην παραπάνω ιστορία, είναι πως ο διηγείτης της ιστορίας, ήταν υπερήφανος για την πράξη του. Ήταν εξυπνάδα αυτό που έκανε, και θα το ξανάκανε Κι όλοι ήμασταν σύμφωνοι ότι στην Ιταλία θα το έκαναν όλοι αυτό, κι ότι ο καθηγητής δεν υπήρχε περίπτωση να βγει από την τάξη. Στην Ιταλική κοινωνία, αν μπορούσες να το κάνεις, να κλέψεις με κάποιον τρόπο, και δεν το έκανες ήσουν απλά ηλίθιος, σχεδόν περιθωριακός. Θα σου έλεγαν ότι είσαι και υπερόπτης και βλάκας, αφού μπορείς να κάνεις κάτι τέτοιο, κάτι παράτυπο και δεν το κάνεις. Την ανάλυση της παραπάνω ιστορίας την αφήνω σε εσάς, απλά σας λέω ότι η Ελληνική νοοτροπία είναι ίδια με αυτή τον Ιταλών σε παρόμοια θέματα.
Με βάση τα παραπάνω δεν υπάρχει ελπίδα. Κι όμως ο φίλος μου, ο Χημικός, μου την έδωσε! Έχει λέει ένα νεογέννητο παιδάκι κι έναν ανιψιό που πάει έκτη τάξη δημοτικού. Τον βοηθάει στα μαθήματα του, μαθηματικά και φυσική. Συχνά συζητούν για διάφορα θέματα, κυρίως γι αυτά που απασχολούν την καθημερινότητα ενός παιδιού. Ο φίλος μου, έχει μείνει άφωνος από τις απαντήσεις που παίρνει από έναν μαθητή δημοτικού, ο οποίος συναναστρέφεται με πολλούς ξένους στο Internet, σε αγγλικό chatroom και διαβάζει blogs, news και forums κυρίως για Games & Cracks. Το Ελληνικό στοιχείο δεν λείπει ούτε από εδώ. Θα έπρεπε κάποιος να του έχει πει, ότι τα πειρατικά προγράμματα είναι παράνομα και καλό είναι να τα αποφεύγουμε. Παρόλα αυτά, σε πολλά κοινωνικά θέματα έχει απόψεις εντελώς διαφορετικές από αυτές των γονέων του, γιατί τα ερεθίσματα που έχει είναι εντελώς διαφορετικά και προέρχονται από πολλές διαφορετικές γωνιές του κόσμου. Παγκοσμιοποίηση! Το μεγαλείο της! Το χάσμα με τους γονείς του, με την προηγούμενη γενιά είναι ακόμη μεγαλύτερο, αισθητά μεγαλύτερο από πριν. Όπως λέει και η διαφήμιση: “Στην μητέρα σου το είπες;”. Ε λοιπόν αυτά τα παιδιά είναι η ελπίδα για ένα καλύτερο αύριο. Ας ελπίσουμε ότι το χάσμα θα γίνει τόσο μεγάλο κάποια στιγμή που δεν θα μπορέσουν να επηρεαστούν σε τέτοιο βαθμό από εμάς, κι ότι θα γίνουν καλύτεροι άνθρωποι. Θα γνωρίσουν ότι, κάπου αλλού, υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που κατάφεραν να φτιάξουν μια κοινωνία λίγο καλύτερη από την δική μας, και τότε ίσως τους μιμηθούν.
